Trenton Adopts Law Prohibiting Open Transporting of Marijuana in a Vehicle

The city plans to adopt the ordinance at its Feb.3 meeting.

Trenton City Council discussed implementing tougher restrictions on the transportation of marijuana in accordance with state law during its meeting Monday.

Public Act 460, effective Dec. 27, 2012, states that a person shall not transport or possess usable marihuana…in or upon a motor vehicle or any self-propelled vehicle designed for land travel unless the usable marihuana is one or more of the following:

  • Enclosed in a sealed case that is carried in the trunk of the vehicle.
  • Enclosed in a sealed case that is not readily accessible from the interior of the vehicle, if the vehicle in which a person traveling does not have a trunk.

Anyone who violates the law is "guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 93 days or a fine of not more than $500.00, or both," the council said.
