ReplyThank all of our public servants. Too often we can forget how dangerous some of their regular duties are. Great job by the GI and Trenton first responders! Prayers and best wishes to the man and his family

Those people would not technically be in the union if they are not paying dues, but they would undoubtedly enjoy the benefits of the contract negotiations that the union makes in regards to wages, safety, benefits, etc. It will diminish the power of unions heavily in this aspect though as membership and funding will decline and they will lose any leverage with management.

ReplyThis statement doesn't make sense at all. Right to work legislation allows people to opt to not join a union when a union is in place, thus they WOULD benefit from the unions negotiations over wages and benefits without paying dues. It almost encourages freeloaders and most certainly does not prevent them.

ReplyI'm never sure what bothers me more, that the Governor and our Legislature keep pulling crap like this, or that Michigan keeps electing/re-electing these people

I find it funny that you argue that collective bargaining has made other workers "lazy". Putting working person against working person is exactly what corporations are trying to do. Arguing about who should have it "less worse" is the race to the bottom. Corporate profits have never been higher in this country, and there is no reason to hold back on hiring or increasing benefits is to make themselves richer.
If you don't like how hard you have to work without reward than maybe you should try and better your workplace with a collective bargaining agreement as opposed trying to destroy over a century's worth of historic precedent and achievement. If Prop 2 fails, it is almost certain the lame duck legislature will make Michigan a Right to Work state. R2W states have shown NO evidence of lower unemployment rates than non R2W states, just like there is NO evidence that charter schools improve education. Your trickle down economic theory has NEVER proven to work in application.
Remember that time all those union workers bankrupted the country? Yeah me either...

Congratulations to Mr. Youngblood! One of my favorite teachers throughout school. Don't know the others but I'm sure it is well deserved
