ReplyI think most voters were bamboozled over the Zoo and the Art milliages. No one disclosed the fact that they were going to be split up among Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County communities with only a portion going to the Zoo and the DIA. If we knew that would we have voted to approve it? Politics as usual.

ReplyI wish you would do some real investigative reporting to make this area a better place for all. Why hasn't anyone focused on the traffic tie-ups caused by the incessant trains on Van Horn, Allen Road and Fort Street? If I take that route, 7 out of 10 times I will have to wait 10 to 15 minutes, sometimes more for the train to pass. Then cars are often lined up half a mile in four directions. I was caught by a long train recently as I was trying to get to Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn when a relative was dying and I did not make it in time. Other times I have tried to avoid the trains by going over to Gibraltar Road, but I get caught there, too, sometimes. The only safe road is West Road. There has to be a better solution.

ReplyI would give them three terms, but no more. This includes all the entrenched politicians from Wayne County and the State of Michigan. You know who they are and because they have so much power, no decent alternatives dare run against them. Result: Same old same old and Ho-hum keep getting re-elected. You, too, John!

ReplyThis is the kind of story I don't feel sorry about. How can anyone be so naive? These kinds of scams have been going around for at least 20 or 30 years and you'd think everyone would know about them by now. Goodbye $14,000!

ReplyTrenton has an outdated mind-set on businesses. The few long entrenched businesses may be doing well and seem to enjoy the City's favor. But new businesses are held to strict regulations that make it difficult for some to get off the ground. A new friendly, supportive attitude might go a long way to encouraging new businesses. Does anyone from the City go out to speak to business owners to ask what the City might do to help and encourage growth? Do we have an ambassador of sorts to search for new opportunities? Yes, I would agree that Trenton is sleeping. They really missed the boat when they didn't want Home Depot to locate on Fort and Harrison! Now look at Woodhaven! But I have a gripe with Woodhaven. They have benefitted from all the taxes from businesses that H.D. brought along with them, but refuse to do anything about all the traffic and trains. You can't go anywhere without stopping for a 15-20 minute train and traffic backed up for a mile in every direction or even make a left hand turn in fewer than 3 or 4 lights. There was Federal money for a viaduct that Woodhaven turned down because they said it's just not Woodhaven residents who are affected. But where are people going to shop? Woodhaven.

On the Blog Post A 'Union Boss' Responds to the Opponents of Proposal 2

ReplyI am voting YES on proposal 2 because it will guarantee every working person the right to belong to a union. I don't think the government should have the right to deny it. The legislature has been taking away many of the rights that make working conditions better for everyone under the guise of "saving money." Hogwash. And I wouldn't want my child to be educated by a corporation. This is just the beginning because this legislature is making rules that will "trickle down" to every working person not just in the public sector.

ReplyI really enjoyed reading this article. How about doing the same for other Downriver communities? I know they all have interesting histories as well. Thank you.

I have been taught to question statistics: How do they know that these lower rates are the result of students just dropping out? If students simply drop out, it indicates lack of something in the home. With the economy as it is, some families may need to move out of State to find work; with the loss of homes through foreclosures, families would need to find other living accommodations; since Trenton is a schools of choice district (I think), students may have found other schools to attend; and finally, people simply move to improve their living conditions taking advantage of the lower mortgage rates and available homes on the market. Could these, possibly, be reasons for the lower graduation rates? Is Trenton losing population?
