Trenton, Visually Impaired Students Hit the Ice at Kennedy Recreation Center

Trenton hockey coach Mike Turner said Downriver visually impaired students and high school students began skating together more than 40 years ago.

Trenton High School hockey players and Interact Club members spent Tuesday morning helping visually impaired students experience the exhilaration of skating at the Kennedy Recreation Center. Whether they were seated, standing or listening in from the sidelines visually impaired students from elementary, middle and high schools across Downriver felt the brisk air against their faces and cold, wet ice against their legs. Some of the more talented skaters, such as Trenton senior Andrew Lindsay, seemed to skate faster pushing a chair than by himself. Seated in the blisteringly-fast chair in front of Lindsay was fifth-grader Matthew, who said he was certain he was traveling at least 75 mph and would have been happier zipping across the ice at …

Trenton Coach Gets 600th Win, Becomes 2nd Winningest Hockey Coach in MHSAA History

The record for most wins by a single Michigan high school hockey coach is 623.

At 600 wins, Trenton High School hockey head coach Mike Turner is the second winningest hockey coach in the history of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). But don't tell him that. To Turner, Saturday's 4-3 win against Traverse City Central High School was just another opportunity to help Trenton students get better on and off the ice. "Nobody goes into coaching and sets goals for themselves," Turner said. "Nobody goes into coaching and says, 'I want to win so many championships. I wanna hit milestone marks.' Nobody does that, because that's pretty selfish." Turner admitted the closer he got to 600 wins, the more he began thinking about hitting that particular milestone in his career, which is 27 seasons as Trenton's head…

Trenton hockey players requested resident donate refundable bottles to be picked up Dec. 8.

The Trenton High School hockey team began a bottle drive this week to raise money to help a local family in need. The team is participating in an effort to help those in need this holiday season by collecting returnables and cash donations. Bottles are to be left on the front porch and are expected to be picked up at about 10 a.m. Dec. 8. All money collected during the bottle drive will be used to purchase presents for a needy family. NHL Star Andy Greene Donates Jerseys to Trenton High School Hockey Team

New Jersey Devil Andy Greene was like a thin, athletic Santa Claus last week when he sneaked into the locker room at Kennedy Recreation Center.

The Trenton High School hockey team suited up last week in their traditional white jerseys and took the ice at Kennedy Recreation Center for a pregame warm up. When they returned to the locker room their faces lit up as if it were Christmas morning. While the players warmed up, NHL star and former Trojan Andy Greene went from locker to locker hanging new jerseys for each player like a much thinner and far more athletic Santa Claus. Greene, who plays for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League, purchased new gold home jerseys for the entire team. "When they went into the room and saw them hanging, there was a tremendous amount of excitement," Head Coach Mike Turner said. In honor of Greene's status as captain of his former team…

NHL Star Andy Greene Honored in Trenton Among Fans, Friends and Family (PHOTOS)

Former Trenton High School hockey player Andy Greene took advantage of the lockout by attending a jersey retirement ceremony in his honor at Kennedy Recreation Center.

As a group of children surrounded him begging for autographs, Andy Greene looked out over the ice at Kennedy Recreation Center and smiled. Greene has plenty to smile about. He currently plays in the National Hockey League for the New Jersey Devils. His team recently made a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals. And he's a Trojan. Greene's status as a former Trenton High School hockey player was immortalized Wednesday night when a banner with his name and number was retired to the rafters above the ice where he once played as a boy. When Greene helped win a state championship for the Trojans in 1998, he dreamed of playing like Detroit Red Wing legends Steve Yzerman and Niklas Lidstrom. He never imagined he would be honored by his former team in …
