Trenton, Grosse Ile Receive Grants for Tree-Planting

Trenton and Grosse Ile will be the recipients of a combined $3,000 grant to plant trees from a combined group involving DNR and DTE.

Trenton and Grosse Ile are two of 33 communities and organizations in Michigan to receive a grant to plant trees from the U.S. Department of Natural Resources and DTE Energy Foundation Tree-Planting Program. The grants range in price from $1,000 to $3,000 and total more than $73,000. The money will go to a variety of communities thorughout the state. Grosse Ile will receive $1,000 and Trenton will receive $2,000, according to a press release. The program is in its sixteenth year and is intended to improve quality of life within communities by planting trees, according to the press release. Trenton Channel Power Plant Plans Bridge Repairs

The repairs are scheduled from June to September, according to the city's website.

The Trenton Channel Power Plant will replace the plant's north bridge deck from June to September, according to the city website. The plant's main entrance off West Jefferson will be temporarily closed during the repairs. Trucks will use a temporary Grosse Ile Parkway entrance, the website states.

Trenton Police Week Dedication to Honor Officers

The ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Trenton police will honor fallen officers Wednesday evening during a dedication ceremony for National Police Week. The event is planned for 5:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2550 Edsel Street. Thousands will gather Wednesday in Washington D.C. to pay tribute to law enforcement members during a series of scheduled events, drawing an estimated 25,000-40,000 attendees. The National Peace Officers' Memorial Service, sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, will include a candlelight vigil to honor law enforcement members who died in the line of duty, according to National Police Week organizers.

Trenton Resident Opens Hookah Lounge in Wyandotte

La Perle Hookah Lounge opened in August 2012. The owners said they are happy with the business they have had so far.

La Perle Hookah Lounge owners, Sanaa Rizk and Anja Dinion, said they are pleased with their first few months of business in Wyandotte. The hookah lounge opened in August 2012. Dinion is from Trenton and they decided on the location in Wyandotte with hopes to draw large crowds to their business. They are located at 121 Maple Street and are open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day. "Business has been very good," Rizk said. "We have seen an increase in familar faces, which means we have regulars and that is good." She said they have non-Wyandotte residents at the hookah lounge often. "We have people from all over the area. It's nice to know we're attracting some people not from right here. We have some regulars from Dearborn and other neighboring…
