The 2012 Trenton Trojans feature a roster full of experienced players and a deep pitching staff.
Hopes are high this spring as an experienced and talented Trenton High School baseball team takes the field for another season. Eight seniors return to a squad that ended last season in second place in the Downriver League, finishing with an overall record of 21-12. The Trojans (3-0, 1-0) are already out to a good start this year, sweeping a doubleheader with Dearborn Heights Annapolis last week and shutting out Wyandotte Roosevelt 2-0 on Monday. Pitching Staff The backbone of Trenton this year will likely be its pitching staff, as head coach Todd Szalka said he has five strong arms that can all get the job done. Leading the staff will be senior Blake Wojtala, who won six games last year, striking out 52 batters and posting a 2.72 ERA. …

Trenton High School traveled to Wyandotte Roosevelt on Monday and beat the Bears 2-0. Pitcher Blake Wojtala struck out 11 en route to a complete-game, shutout win.
Trenton High School opened Downriver League action on Monday with a 2-0 win at Wyandotte Roosevelt. The Trojans (3-0, 1-0) and Bears (1-1, 0-1) both had their best starting pitchers on the mound Monday, with senior Blake Wojtala on the hill for Trenton and senior Devon Jones going for Roosevelt. Both hurlers were sharp, with each of them tossing a complete game. The Trojans, however, were able to manufacture two runs against Jones in the seventh to break a scoreless tie and Wojtala ultimately captured the shutout victory. To start the seventh inning, Trojans senior Derek Berger walked. A Roosevelt throwing error on a bunt by the next hitter, senior Guy Ellis, and an intentional walk to senior Chad Hamilton left the bases loaded for Trenton…

He took the reigns as starting quarterback in the second game of last season and is now looking to lead his team into the playoffs.
PROFILE: Position: QB Class: Senior At a glance: Last summer, Chad Hamilton was in a battle for the starting job at quarterback and was unsure where he'd be on the field come opening kickoff. In this, his senior year, there's no question. It's his offense. A three-sport standout athlete, Hamilton also plays basketball and baseball. He suffered a torn meniscus against Wyandotte midway through the basketball season and played through it. After Trenton fell in the district championship game, surgery on his knee kept him out of baseball season, but he says the knee is now fully healed. IN HIS WORDS: On last season: "I felt I didn't really get settled in (as quarterback) until the last few games. But this year, I feel a lot more confident." On …

The versatile offensive player returns for his senior year at Trenton with hopes of leading his team to the playoffs.
PROFILE: Position: RB, WR Class: Senior At a glance: Big and athletic, Norvis Smith will be a key figure in the offense as both a running back and wide receiver for quarterback Chad Hamilton. Smith should provide a solid 1-2 punch with fellow running back Mike Czarnecki. Smith also runs track and along with younger brother Terez, helped lead the basketball team to the district finals last winter. IN HIS WORDS: On last season: "Last year I think we needed a little more communication. There wasn't that many boys that stepped up." Personal goals this season: "I'm looking to just get some wins for Trenton. I think we've got a pretty good chance of making it to the playoffs." Plans after school: "I want to go to college to play basketball or …

One of the most crucial players on this year's team on both sides of the football will be Trenton's All-Downriver standout Jason Barbosa.
PROFILE: Position: WR, CB Class: Senior At a glance: The three-year player will certainly provide quarterback Chad Hamilton's favorite target at wide receiver. He was named to the all-downriver team last season with a team-best 22 catches for 367 yards and two touchdowns. Perhaps as important, the athletic and sure-handed Barbosa will have to use those hands at the cornerback position locking down the opposing quarterback's favorite targets. The junior defensive back recorded four interceptions and had 23 tackles for the Trojans last season. IN HIS WORDS: On last season: "We were lacking leadership a lot and we were kind of slow. For me, it was fun. I got to play both ways." On upcoming season: "I'm looking to just get some wins for …

Another anchor in the defense, this outside linebacker will be relied on to hit some people--and he's says he's ready.
PROFILE: Position: OLB Class: Senior At a glance: Linebackers are the players who have to "lower the boom" as they say, and that's what this senior outside linebacker is ready to do. He plays with that kind of controlled recklessness that you need for that position, even saying that his favorite memory of football is the workouts and two-a-day practices in the summer--and we're not quite sure if he's kidding. IN HIS WORDS: On last season: "Personally, it was a learning experience. As a team, it was pretty disappointing with only two wins, but hopefully we'll turn it around this year." On upcoming season: "Definitely get to the playoffs as a team. Personally, I want to keep people from running around on us and stop the passing." Plans after…
