She shared the performance with family and friends. The recital featured Riley Herman's 11-year-old daughter Emily and her high school friend Lynne Newicki. Donate to Local Food Banks for National Canned Food Month

The Trenton Food Pantry and several local churches are accepting donations.

February is National Canned Food Month and the Trenton Food Pantry needs donations of canned food year round to meet the needs of many hungry children and adults in the area. People wanting to volunteer or donate can write (there's no phone) or stop by the Trenton Food Pantry, 2901 Manning Drive, during the hours of operation mentioned above, located in the back of St. Timothy's Church next door to the Creative Montessori School. St. Paul Sends Troops to Trenton Food Pantry

Carole Tarnowski has been rounding up volunteers for the Trenton Food Pantry since 1975.

The first line of defense against hunger in Trenton is made up of an army of volunteers who belong to churches spread throughout the city. The newest addition to the fight against hunger is St. Paul Lutheran Church. Volunteers from St. Paul have agreed to volunteer each week for one month at the Trenton Food Pantry to sort, stack and send out food for local needy families. Carole Tarnowski has been rounding up troops for the pantry since 1975 including Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack. "The mayor has always been volunteering," Tarnowski said. Tarnowski said volunteers and donations always seem to increase during the holidays, but there is always room for more. Fresh vegetables don't last very long at the food pantry. Tarnowski encourages people to…

The Trenton Food Pantry: 'Ain't No Mickey Mouse Operation'

For the last 40 years, volunteers from around Downriver have made the Trenton Food Pantry a welcoming, helpful place for needy Trenton families.

Each month, a man with a weak handshake and a slow, awkward gate shuffles through the faded, brown doors of the Trenton Food Pantry. Volunteers have affectionately dubbed him "Chia Pet," because he recently grew his hair back after finishing a long round of chemotherapy treatments that left him bald and thin. Now, as he checks in with pantry staff, his hair is shoulder-length and he has a full beard that reaches down to the collar of his t-shirt. "Chia Pet’s" real name is Tom Collier, and for Collier the food pantry is a necessary monthly stop. He is currently in his fourth bout with cancer and his body is too weak and fragile to keep a job. Over the last 37 years, Carole Tarnowski has used the Trenton Food Pantry to feed thousands of …

How to Help the Hungry In Trenton, Grosse Ile This Holiday Season

One in four Michigan children lives in poverty. In this season of being thankful and giving back, here are ways to help make others' holidays warmer.

The holiday season is a time of joy, and if one's lucky, of plenty. Sadly hunger continues to be a problem, with one in four Michigan children living in poverty and nearly half qualifying for free or low-cost school lunches. Some of these youngsters can only look forward to plenty of hunger pangs, but here at Patch we want to help. Patch.com has launched an online food drive, with all of its 30 Michigan sites participating. Patch is partnering with Gleaners Community Food Bank in this virtual food drive, and the goal is to raise $10,000 by Nov. 17 to help feed local families. Sign up for the Trenton Grosse Ile Patch newsletter. Shop Gleaners' virtual grocery shelves. Click to get started! Follow progress of Patch's fight against hunger. …

The Trenton Channel Power Plant and the City of Trenton joined together June 8 and raised over $2,200 at their 14th Annual Chili Christmas Luncheon.
