Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has vetoed a bill that would have allowed concealed weapons into public schools and sports arena, according to a report on Michigan Public Radio. The Michigan Legislature passed Senate Bill 59 late last week that would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones, but in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, CT, many had called for Snyder to veto the legislation. Following Gov. Rick Snyder's call to action Thursday, the Michigan Legislature passed a right-to-work bill amid throngs of protesters on the Capitol lawn. The bill could be on Snyder’s desk as soon as next week. The bill prohibits unions from collecting fees from nonunion workers, which opponents say would weaken organized labor’s ability to bargain for good wages while supporters say it would boost jobs. In a Pure Michigan video posted Thursday on YouTube, Snyder says his decision to pursue such legislation is "about being pro-work and giving workers the freedom to choose who they associate with." With the recent ratification of a new teacher contract, the previously cut foreign language classes are back at Trenton High School. Members of the Trenton Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday night to pass a new contract in which teachers were forced to take concessions. Click here for a list of concessions. As a result of the concessions, district administration is now able to call back nearly 14 full-time equivalent positions, which includes foreign language teachers. Trenton teachers and district administration ratify a new contract that includes concessions for teachers.
The Trenton Education Association agreed to concessions in order to ratify a new contract with the Trenton Public Schools Board of Education at a special meeting Wednesday. Teachers agreed to a two-year contract that contains concessions that will reduce salaries and increase insurance premium costs for the 2011-12 and 2013-14 school years. Concessions include: The district and teachers have been negotiating a new contract for nearly two years. In a statewide day of action created by the Michigan Education Association members of the Trenton Education Association gathered at Trenton High School Tuesday morning to show solidarity and display signs in support of the TEA. Mark Hoffman, district director of the TEA, helped coordinate the event. "This is a statewide day of action," Hoffman said. "The TEA, in conjunction with its affiliates and friends across the state, demands that Lansing stop and reverse its unnecessary, deep, and hurtful cuts to public education, as well as the various other attacks on public schooling in general and teachers in particular." I was so glad to see that the governor used some common sense here and also took into account public opinion to veto this bill. Something Snyder totally refused to do with regard to vengeful right to work legislation.   more ›
