Pics: Student Government Day at Trenton City Hall

Trenton High School students took over the city for a few hours on Tuesday.

For a few hours Tuesday morning, Trenton High School students took over the reigns of Trenton City Hall and, with the help of city officials, managed to keep the city running as smoothly as ever. Trenton students participated in student government day, when high school students take on the roles of city officials and learn what it's like to run a city. Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack welcomed students in the lobby at city hall, where snacks and refreshments awaited the future leaders. Students were assigned specific city positions ranging from mayor to clerk, city council to city administrator and everything in between. The morning concluded with a mock city council meeting in the council chambers, where students tackled an agenda filled with …

Council Members Approve Pay Cuts, Increased Healthcare Costs

Trenton City Council members voted in favor of salary reductions and increased health care costs for non-union city employees Monday night.

In a vote that quote "shocked" Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack, city council members voted in favor of salary reductions and increased health care costs for non-union city employees at a regularly scheduled city council meeting Monday. The changes affect 31 current employees. Also, a number of retirees, whose benefits mirror the most current employee health care costs, will be affected by the increase. "I didn't have a clue that that was going to be presented last night," Stack said. "I was a little shocked when it was brought up to be voted on." Stack added the changes had been discussed in several previous budget study sessions, but was not aware Councilman Tim Taylor would be asking council members to vote last night. Taylor made a motion to …

Keech, I believe that there are money pits in Trenton that Council should be addressing first! Everyone knows that the Ice Rink costs the City close to a million every year, it is not a self sustaining service, as well as the Transfer Station. Administration had a budget that BALANCED without taking ANY cuts from any employees! City employees, especially non-management, are already underpaid …   more ›

City Anticipates $2.7 M Budget Shortfall for 2012-13

Several factors contribute to a shortfall for Trenton's 2012-13 budget year.

Early projections for the 2012-13 budget show the City of Trenton with about a $2.7 million shortfall according City Administrator Jim Wagner. The projections for the coming year were presented to city council members during a special meeting Monday night. Though the numbers are very rough, Wagner said it is safe to say the city will not be able to balance the coming budget without making cuts and cost saving decisions. Budget cuts could come from a number of sources including, but not limited to, continuation of employee concessions, reduction of workforce, a hiring freeze and mandates provided by the state. Wanger said no specific cuts were discussed at the meeting. Besides cuts, there are other ways for the city to save money. Wagner …

Ficano, Palamara Hand Over Marina to Trenton

Wayne County Commissioner Joseph Palamara and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano were in Trenton to officially hand over the reigns of the Elizabeth Park Marina to city administrators.

The Elizabeth Park Marina is officially a part of the Trenton Parks and Recreation Department after Wayne County Commissioner Joseph Palamara and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano handed over the reigns last Monday. The idea to offer the marina to the City of Trenton came in March 2011 when Wayne County Parks Director Beverly Watts approached Trenton administrators. Watts said the marina was losing money for Wayne County and Trenton administrators thought the idea could benefit the city. "We are very grateful that the city said yes," Palamara said. Palamara said he is also looking forward to restoring the "iconic bridges" at Elizabeth Park. "We are this close to having the work start," Palamara said. He added the contract to begin …
