Trenton, Grosse Ile Not Good Fit for Michigan-Based Gourmet Grocery Chain

Trenton and Grosse Ile do not meet specific criteria to land a popular Michigan-based gourmet grocery chain.

Check one more gourmet grocery chain off the short list of possibilities for Trenton and Grosse Ile. Justin Hiller, vice president of Hiller's Market, said neither Trenton nor Grosse Ile meet specific criteria used to decide if a location is right for the Michigan-based gourmet grocery chain. "Our customer base should be densely populated, average income is typically in the 80-125K per year, age is typically 44+, but we are trying to change that currently to target millennial's (ages 25-32)," Hiller said in an email to Patch. Trenton does not meet any of the Hiller's requirements, but Grosse Ile was close. While the island meets the average income and average age requirements, but with a population of about 11,000 Grosse Ile is not densely…

I find it interesting that WF has a store opening in Detroit. Not sure of the store address, but the fact that there are MULTIPLE cities that would shop at a WF location in the downriver area makes no sense to not build one here. Ok, so we don't all make 100k+ a year. I imagine the Detroit location is either in an upscale area or an easy accessible to folks working in the area spot???!!! Just …   more ›

Patch Readers Demand Gourmet Grocery Chain

Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch users continue to demand a gourmet grocery chain, even after two major chains say they have no plans to build in Trenton, Grosse Ile or Woodhaven.

"Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would be so welcome here." -- Marie Unfortunately for Marie and several other Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch readers, representatives of both Trader Joe's and Whole Foods said they do not plan to build in Trenton, Grosse Ile or Woodhaven. Check out the stories published this week on the issue: Several Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch readers have expressed a desire for a gourmet grocery chain in the area. Now that Trader Joe's and Whole Foods have said they aren't coming, what are some other gourmet grocery chains you'd like to see in Trenton, Grosse Ile or Woodhaven?

What about Market Fresh? Also, Better Health recently opened in Taylor-Southgate, but I'd love a gourmet-healthy food store just a bit closer. And the empty KMart on West and Allen in Woodhaven is a perfect spot for one.   more ›

Trader Joe's Responds to Trenton's Request

Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack recently sent an email to the company requesting a Trader Joe's location at Fort Street and Van Horn.

Trader Joe's is a no go -- at least for the next two years. Sign up for the Trenton-Grosse Ile newsletter for a chance to win $50! Rachel Broderick, a customer relations representative for Trader Joe's, said the company's two-year plan does not contain locations in Trenton. Trader Joe's officials do not plan to build another location anywhere in Michigan. Many Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch readers speculated reasons why Trader Joe's would not come to Trenton and, according to Broderick, there's no secret algorithm or specific criteria for an area to get a Trader Joe's location. "We don’t really comment with any more detail on how we select our locations," Boderick said. Broderick said the best thing for area residents to do is request a Trader …

What happened to shop local? Support local business? Check out Concessi in Riverview. Local mom and pop store, many unique items, check it out just once. We will probably lose a few mom and pop stores once the big guys come it to the city.   more ›

Mayor Seeking Gourmet Grocery Chain for Trenton

Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack has sent several emails to a major gourmet grocery chain to encourage the company to open up shop on Van Horn in Trenton.

Trader Joe's has four locations in Michigan and Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack wants to add one more to the mitten. Stack has contacted the major gourmet grocery chain four times via email to recommend they bring the store to Trenton. Stack said she thinks the former site of the Metro South Church, 3000 Van Horn Road, on the corner of Fort Street and Van Horn Road would be the perfect spot to house a Trader Joe's. A representative of Trader Joe's responded to one of Stack's emails Tuesday afternoon: "Rest assured, every email is read and your recommendation will be passed along to our real estate folks." A connection has been made. What do you think about Trader Joe's coming to Trenton? If not Trader Joe's, then what?
