The Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon was created by former Grosse Ile resident, Emily Schaller, who has battled cystic fibrosis since she was a child.
Former Grosse Ile resident Emily Schaller began her battle with cystic fibrosis when she was a young child. Doctors told her she would likely not live long enough to graduate high school. Since her diagnosis, Schaller graduated from Grosse Ile High School in 2000, created a foundation dedicated to increasing the quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis called Rock CF and began an annual half marathon that takes place on the island. The Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon is set for March 24 and registration has already begun. "Our registration numbers are ahead of last year so we are expecting a great crowd of runners,"Schaller said. In 2000, Emily Schaller did something doctors never thought possible. She graduated from Grosse Ile High School. As a child, Schaller was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis: an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website. In 2007, Schaller founded Rock CF in Trenton, which is a web-based music and fitness driven foundation that raises money and awareness for cystic fibrosis. "I've always been kind of a face for the disease across southeast Michigan, especially Grosse Ile, and now nationwide, but Grosse Ile has been a huge supporter," Schaller said. The Student Council Downriver League includes Trenton, Allen Park, Wyandotte, Taylor Truman, Taylor Kennedy, Melvindale, Woodhaven, Carlson, Lincoln Park and Southgate.
Among the blanket making and leadership training at Trenton High School Tuesday was a massive collective of young minds deciding the futures of thousands of students across Downriver. Trenton Student Council members hosted the year's first Student Council Downriver League meeting, which included students from Allen Park, Wyandotte, Taylor Truman, Taylor Kennedy, Melvindale and Southgate. Student Council President Joe Lesada and Vice President Hana Mitsusada-Boylan helped organize the event. "These are students from similar schools who can all bring something different to the table," Lesada said.
