No injuries were reported after an explosion at the Riverview Land Preserve left two turbines completely destroyed, according to Trenton City Administrator Jim Wagner. One of the turbines exploded early Friday morning causing a nearby turbine to explode, Wagner said. The explosion was a catastrophic loss for Riverview. The explosion blew out a side of a building that housed the turbines. An investigation has begun to determine the cause of the explosion. The turbines were used to burn off methane gas created when processing garbage.

A recent equipment failure is likely to increase odor blowing into Trenton from the Riverview Land Preserve.
Despite recent efforts to reduce odor, an equipment failure at the Riverview Land Preserve is likely to increase odor blowing into Trenton. There is no risk to residents' safety, according to the City of Trenton website. Two generators used to burn off methane gas suffered catastrophic malfunctions Friday and are no longer functioning. Trenton officials said it could take 30 days or more to fix or replace the necessary equipment. Residents might notice an increase in methane gas odor, which is a byproduct of processing garbage at the landfill. Wayne County officials have been notified and are monitoring the issue according to City Administrator Jim Wagner at a Trenton City Council study session Monday night. Riverview Mayor Tim Durand told…

A Wayne County official said trash blowing onto residents' property has not been a big concern.
Trenton residents continue to complain about a odor coming from the Riverview Land Preserve.
The Riverview Land Preserve received a second noncompliance for odor on March 22 after a Trenton resident called a hotline and complained about the odor. The Land Resource Management Division for Wayne County issued the violation. This makes the second noncompliance issued to the landfill since February. The most recent complaint came from a Trenton resident on Pinetree Drive, less than a half-mile away from the facility. There were 28 complaints concerning odor from the landfill in March and Patrick Cullen, acting director of the division, said most of them were made by Trenton residents. The Land Resource Management Division sent an inspector to Pinetree Drive to verify the odor mentioned in the complaint and then issued the …

King Road is often littered with trash falling out of various garbage trucks making their way to the Riverview Land Preserve.
Trenton Board of Education member Thomas Kinney complained to mayor and council members about trash from garbage trucks blowing into in his yard last Monday at the Trenton City Council meeting. Kinney said he's found bricks, pieces of metal and various other pieces of trash in his yard--including 300 coffee creamers in one day. "It is a nuisance, and I don't know what can be done," Kinney said. "It seems to be getting worse." He said the trash falls off a number of garbage trucks driving to the Riverview Land Preserve. "I think it's just them (garbage haulers) flying through there and all the trash is flying into the street and it just gets in my yard," Kinney said. "It's just a pain to pick up everyday." Kinney added he would like to see …

After a Trenton resident complained Saturday, a Wayne County inspector issued a violation to the Riverview Land Preserve for odor. “It was almost like all the skunks in the world were over there," a Trenton official said.
Residents and officials said it was a particularly smelly Saturday in Trenton near the Riverview landfill. It was so smelly that the Riverview landfill was cited Saturday for a noncompliance for odor violation after an inspector from the Wayne County Department of Public Services responded to a complaint call from a Trenton resident. Councilperson MaryEllen McLeod mentioned Saturday’s odor at Monday’s Trenton City Council meeting. “On Saturday, when I was going to shop, I stepped out of my garage and smelled the most delightfully horrible odor, and it was obviously coming from the Riverview landfill,” McLeod said. McLeod added she lives on Kenwood Street, which is not in close proximity of the landfill. Patrick Cullen, the acting director …

A letter written by Trenton City Administrator Jim Wagner to Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano has resulted in an increase of inspections of the Riverview Land Preserve.
One complaint from the City of Trenton was all it took to increase inspections at the Riverview Land Preserve, according to Patrick Cullen, the acting director of the Land Resource Management Division of the Wayne County Department of Public Services. Cullen said that a letter from City Administrator Jim Wagner requesting assistance prompted him to increase inspections from once per week to three times per week. He added that during the inspections a Wayne County DPS employee is expected to go to 18 different preapproved plots on a map of the Trenton-Riverview area to measure the intensity of the odor from the landfill. Cullen said Wagner's letter took him by surprise. "I thought the City of Riverview was aware of the issues and had been …
