City Officials Give Riverside Property Owner Deadline for Abatement

Trenton officials met with Iqbal Nasir Wednesday afternoon to discuss the former Riverside Hospital property.

Trenton officials gave the owner of the former Riverside Hospital an ultimatum Wednesday afternoon. Officials set a deadline for Iqbal Nasir to begin demolition and abatement at the property by May 15 during a Brownfield Authority meeting at city hall. Nasir said he would get the abatement started as quickly as possible, and people will be in the building working by the deadline. Nasir added he plans to move his personal office from its current location on Allen Road to building nearest to West Jefferson, after construction is completed. While Nasir did not give a date of completion, he did say the abatement should be completed by the end of the year. "It has to be internally demolished and then you go in and build, so I don't know a real …

Well, in my opinion if they are going to require the owner of the former Riverside Hospital property to clean up, fix up, paint and repair broken Windows, they should also require the owner or owners of the former Mclouth Steel property to do the same. We're tried of looking at that mess too.   more ›

Two Men Arrested at Former Riverside Hospital

The following information was supplied by the Trenton Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Trenton police arrested two men after the men admitted to being on the property of the former Riverside Hospital at about 3:30 a.m. March 2. Police received a report of three people dressed in black walking around the Riverside Hospital property. As officers responded to the area they saw two men running away from the property fence line. Officers detained the two men who admitted to being on the property and stated that their friend was still inside the fence attempting to get on the roof of one of the hospital buildings, according to a Trenton police report. Police said one of the detained men had a large deer antler made into a smoking pipe on him at the time of the arrest. Police searched a vehicle belonging to one of the men and found…

Former Trenton Mayor Weighs in on Riverside Hospital

"The City taxpayers would be on the hook for the demolition with the hopes of selling the property for enough that would recover their costs." -- Former Trenton Mayor Gerald Brown

Letter to the Editor:   The Patch has written several articles about the status of the former Riverside Hospital property and people have posted their comments about what they think should be done with the condition of the site.  I understand their frustration, but making demands of the City to take on the responsibility to demolish the privately owned site is not that easy of a process, in fact, it is very difficult to accomplish.   I've read that the current owner of the property, for whatever reason, has not allowed the City's Engineering Department to have access to the property, so that they can determine the current condition in order for them to provide the City's Dangerous Building Board a report for them to act on.  Seeking a …

Former Riverside Hospital Owner Promises Plan for Blighted Property

Last year, Trenton officials asked former Riverside Hospital owner Iqbal Nasir to fix several violations on the property, but the work had not been completed by late January.

Former Riverside Hospital property owner Iqbal Nasir said he is working on a detailed plan for the blighted property and intends to submit the plan to Trenton officials by Monday, according to Mayor Kyle Stack. Stack said she met with Nasir who told her his long-term plans for the property include redevelopment of at least four levels of the multilevel main building. Ideas for floors include: A deed restriction on the property, which Henry Ford Health System sold to Nasir in 2009, prohibit the sale of the property to persons and/or entities that would be in direct competition of Henry Ford Health System. Stack said Nasir is working with HFHS to help facilitate his plan. Stack said Nasir also plans to fix several violations on the property …

Trenton Officials Pursue Court Order Despite Former Riverside Hospital Owner's Recent Comments

Former Riverside Property owner Iqbal Nasir told The News-Herald last week that he is "willing to let building inspectors inside the hospital."

Trenton officials are following through with a court order to inspect the site of the Former Riverside Hospital despite the owner's comments last week. Iqbal Nasir told The News-Herald he would allow Trenton officials access to the former hospital property to inspect the buildings. City Administrator Jim Wagner said as of early Thursday afternoon he has not received written permission to inspect the building as requested. "We made an offer to sign an agreement, which he did not return to me in the allotted time," Wagner said. "I recommend to council they seek a court order," Wagner said. "We are in the process of getting the material to receive the court order to inspect the building." Wagner said city officials need legal authorization to…

Trenton Officials Seek Court Order for Former Riverside Hospital Property

Former Riverside Hospital property owner Iqbal Nasir did not allow Trenton officials access to inspect the site in January.

Several Trenton officials said they are fed up with the ongoing issues regarding the former Riverside Hospital property and voted to seek legal counsel at Monday's city council meeting. City Administrator Jim Wagner said he would like City Attorney Wallace Long to commence proceedings toward obtaining a court order for city officials to inspect the site and that those findings be forwarded to the Dangerous Building Board for a hearing on the matter. Wagner, City Engineer Bill Hogan and City Building Inspector Virgil Maiani met with Nasir on Jan. 25 to request access to the property for an inspection. City officials have issued Nasir 10 violations since Oct. 2012 and an inspection must be made to determine if the violations have been …

HFHS DID work with Nasir. He, however, never attends these meetings, and never agrees to any kind of help. Nasir bought this property KNOWING that there was a deed restriction in advance, he didn't have to wait to come up with plans of what to do with it, shouldn't he already have had a business plan? Anyone else could buy it and do whatever else they wanted, and I'm sure if they wanted a health …   more ›

Former Riverside Hospital Project Might Move to Riverview

Local physician Iqbal Nasir planned to build a skilled nursing center at the former Riverside Hospital property, but told Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack in September 2012 he would not pursue the project.

Riverview officials recently signed an agreement with Trenton physician Iqbal Nasir to begin the process of selling him a large piece of property at Fort Street and King Road. Nasir plans to build a skilled nursing center on the former Farmer Jack property, according to David Scurto, community development director for the City of Riverview. "It's similar to what he proposed earlier," Scurto said. In 2011, Nasir told Trenton city officials he planned to build a $13 million project at the former Riverside property, 2171 West Jefferson, which included a skilled nursing center featuring 80 beds, an acute rehabilitation facility that will focus on the needs of seniors and a health services teaching school. In September 2012, Nasir told Trenton …

Riverside Property Owner: 'I Have Not Given Up On This Place'

Former Riverside Hospital property owner Iqbal Nasir told Mayor Kyle Stack that he no longer plans to go through with construction on a skilled nursing center and assisted living facility in September.

"I have not given up on this place," Iqbal Nasir said of the former Riverside Hospital property. "This is my neighborhood and I promise not to give up." Work continues this week to improve the exterior of the former Riverside Hospital property owned by Nasir. Though a recent project to redevelop Riverside did not go through, Nasir said he will continue to work with Trenton administration and Henry Ford Health System to create a plan for the property. Nasir had planned to build a skilled nursing center featuring 80 beds, an acute rehabilitation facility and a health services teaching school on the property, but told Mayor Kyle Stack in September he would not go through with the plan. "We are looking for some other opportunity, other than …

Hey Trenton! What Should Be Done With the Former Riverside Hospital Property?

It appears the project at the former Riverside Hospital property is a no-go. What should the current owner, local doctor Iqbal Nasir, do with the property? We want to hear from you!

It seems the former Riverside Hospital will not be used for a major project that's been in the works for nearly two years. Mayor Kyle Stack said that property owner Iqbal Nasir, chief of medicine at Oakwood Southshore Medical Center, told her he would no longer go through with a planned $13 million, yearlong construction project that was to include a skilled nursing center and assisted living facility. The project was to be known as Riverside Commons. Residents have complained about the blighted property for several years since the hospital closed in 2002. City Administrator Jim Wagner said he and Stack met with high-ranking representatives of Henry Ford Health System who have offered to extended their help to assist the city in finding …
