High schools with an enrollment of 893 or more students are classified as Class A schools by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
Trenton High School athletes will be competing in the top classification for the 2013-14 school year. Schools with an enrollment of 893 students or more are now considered Class A schools by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). Trenton will be moved up from a Class B school at the end of the 2012-13 school year. Classifications for the upcoming school year are based on a second semester count date, according to a MHSAA release. The enrollment limits for Class B are now 429-892; Class C are 207-428; and schools with enrollments of 206 and fewer are Class D. The record for most wins by a single Michigan high school hockey coach is 623.
At 600 wins, Trenton High School hockey head coach Mike Turner is the second winningest hockey coach in the history of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). But don't tell him that. To Turner, Saturday's 4-3 win against Traverse City Central High School was just another opportunity to help Trenton students get better on and off the ice. "Nobody goes into coaching and sets goals for themselves," Turner said. "Nobody goes into coaching and says, 'I want to win so many championships. I wanna hit milestone marks.' Nobody does that, because that's pretty selfish." The Michigan High School Athletic Association awarded 32 student-athletes with scholarships through its Scholar-Athlete Award program.
A Grosse Ile teen was selected by the Michigan High School Athletic Association to receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Keeton Thayer Ross played numerous sports at Grosse Ile High School including baseball, basketball and football. He received all-conference honors for baseball and football and was an academic all-state athlete for baseball. Ross is an Eagle Scout, served as vice president and president of the school’s National Honor Society chapter and was president of the German Club. He plans on majoring in nuclear engineering and radiological sciences at either Georgia Tech or the University of California-Berkeley. The Michigan High School Athletic Association used clips from the hockey game between Trenton and Detroit Catholic Central on Jan. 30 for a YouTube video.
The Trenton Trojans were featured in a Michigan High School Athletic Association highlight video found on YouTube. The video shows clips from Trenton's 5-1 loss to Detroit Catholic Central. The Trojans are currently 3 and 7 for the season. Their next game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 8 against Calumet High School at Kennedy Recreation Center. Athletes from across the country and beyond will descend on Trenton to compete in front of college coaches and scouts at the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Prep Hockey Showcase Feb. 6-9.
Over 80 scouts packed into the Kennedy Recreation Center last year for the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) Prep Hockey Showcase, and showcase officials are expecting as many or more this year. Over 43 top-ranked high school teams, with hockey players from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ontario, are set to play several games over the four-day event, according to an MIHL release. "There's going to be a lot of great hockey and a lot of scouts come from all over the place," said Tim Beaker operations manager at Kennedy. Downriver area teams Trenton, Wyandotte and Dearborn are expected to play in the showcase. The 13th annual showcase is set for Feb. 6-9. Teammate Tom Stackpole goes home early after two losses in a row.
AUBURN HILLS – Trenton High School's Warren Markowsky came back after an opening-round loss to earn a spot on the podium Saturday and an eighth place finish in the MHSAA Division 2 individual wrestling finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Markowsky lost to Thursday to Gabe Morse of Lowell, 16-1 by T-Fall, but came back to win his next two matches. The Trenton senior lost to Travis Dragomer of Stevensville Lakeshore, 8-2 by decision, then to Jesse Smith of Warren Lincoln in the battle for seventh place. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting a video contest and giving away tickets.
Hey, student-athletes: It’s time to put down the bats and 9-irons and pick up the video camera. The Michigan High School Athletic Association wants to know, “Why do you play high school sports?” Do you love the camaraderie? Or maybe it’s the edge of a tight match? Or perhaps it’s a free way to stay in shape and get a summer tan? Whatever the reason, let the MHSAA know and your video could be showcased to thousands. The group is hosting a contest, where creativity is being encouraged. The best videos will be compiled and shown at MHSAA championship games throughout the 2011-12 high school season.
