The Trenton Police Department retired one of their most beloved and hardworking officers at Trenton City Hall Tuesday night. Sign up for the Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch newsletter. Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack, Police Chief Jim Nardone and officers and their dogs from across Downriver descended on city hall to see Kopper off. Kopper's handler, Cpl. Rick Tanguay, said retiring his partner was bittersweet. Kopper will spend the rest of his days with the Tanguay family -- relaxing. Police officials made the decision to retire Kopper after he suffered an injury during a training exercise in October.

Unable to fully recover from an injury, Trenton police dog Kopper will officially retire from the Trenton Police Department during a regularly scheduled city council meeting at 8 p.m.Tuesday at Trenton City Hall. Trenton police dog Kopper sustained an injury that temporarily paralyzed his rear legs during a training exercise in Alpena on Oct. 1. The injury took place while Kopper was attending the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers annual seminar with his handler, Trenton Police Officer Rick Tanguay. As Kopper was running after a decoy he suffered a fibrocartilaginous embolism or spinal stroke, which, although not painful in most cases, caused paralysis to his rear legs, according to Tanguay. "I was scared for him, but luckily I had good people around me and we took him to the hospital in less than 15 minutes," Tanguay said.
