Meet the parents—Justin Verlander’s parents, that is. Kathy and Richard Verlander, the mother and father of the star Detroit Tigers pitcher, will sign their book, Rocks Across the Pond, at West Grange Pharmacy on Monday, March 25. The Verlanders will sign their book from 4-8 p.m. PAWS, the Tigers mascot, also will be present. Rocks Across the Pond is the Verlanders’ story of parenting. “You have to really emphasize the positives,” Richard Verlander said in a press release. “Try not to get too caught up with the highs and lows. Keep things on an even keel and don’t think too far down the road.” West Grange Pharmacy is located at 3390 West Rd. in Trenton.

Will Justin Verlander win the American League Most Valuable Player Award? The answer will be revealed later Monday when the Baseball Writers Association of America announces the winner of the annual award. Verlander already has won the AL Cy Young Award after going 24-5 with a 2.50 earned-run average, and he is trying to become the first pitcher to win the MVP since Dennis Eckersley in 1992. ESPN.com’s David Schoenfield believes Verlander is one of five candidates with a shot at the MVP. The others are Boston’s Jacoby Ellsbury, New York’s Curtis Granderson, Toronto’s Jose Bautista and Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera.
