Wayne County had the most drunk driving arrests during a three-day enforcement blitz.
Wayne County law enforcement joined 20 other Michigan counties in a drunk driving crackdown during Super Bowl weekend earlier this month. The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning reported that the three-day enforcement blitz netted 45 drunk drivers, including 11 who were arrested for a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .17 or higher under Michigan's High BAC Law. Wayne County had the most drunk driving arrests than any other county with 10 OWI arrests and 3 High BAC arrests in Detroit, Grosse Ile, Taylor, Wyandotte, Garden City and Northville Township. James Farrell, Grosse Ile resident and public works employee, died at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit on Monday night after he was buried alive in a cave-in while attempting to fix a broken water main.
Grosse Ile Township officials released a statement regarding the recent death of township public works employee James Farrell. Farrell, 56, was injured on the job in a cave-in last week while attempting to fix a broken water main. Here is the statement released Tuesday afternoon: The Township of Grosse Ile is deeply saddened by the January 28, 2013 death of James Farrell. Jim, a lifelong resident of Grosse Ile, worked for the Township for over 11 years. Grosse Ile Department of Public Works employee James Farrell, who was injured on the job in a cave-in last week, died Monday night, according to Township Supervisor Brian Loftus. Farrell was 56. Trenton public safety officials said Farrell was buried under nearly two feet of mud and water for nearly 14 minutes after a trench dug to fix a broken water main collapsed Thursday morning. Farrell was airlifted to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he remained until his death. "Jim was just a genuinely good guy," Loftus said. An investigation into a job site cave-in, which lead to the death of a Grosse Ile public works employee, began Friday after crews filled in a 12-foot deep hole where the man was buried alive. The 56-year-old islander was not breathing and did not have a pulse when he was pulled from the hole were he was attempting to fix a broken water main Thursday, officials said. Emergency personnel later revived him. The water main located just a few feet off Meridian Road near Bridge Road was fixed by a private contractor and filled in Friday morning, according to Grosse Ile Police Chief Joseph Porcerelli. OUTSIDE DETROIT, MI -- A Grosse Ile Township employee is in critical condition after spending nearly 14 minutes buried underground while attempting to fix a water main break on the island Thursday morning. The 56-year-old Department of Public Works employee and lifelong Grosse Ile resident became buried after the walls of a 12-foot deep hole dug to fix the water main collapsed on top of him. The man was not breathing and did not have a pulse when he was pulled from the hole near Meridian Road, according to Grosse Ile Fire Chief Duncan Murdock. This is so sad but the reality of such accidents. Now the family suffers the loss of a loved one. Co-workers and friends have to deal with this devastating loss.
