Grosse Ile Officials Appeal Report on Workplace Death of Employee

James Farrell was buried alive when attempting to fix a broken water main on Jan. 24. He died four days later at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Township of Grosse Ile officials appealed a report issued by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (MiOSHA) regarding the workplace death of an employee early this week. MiOSHA issued the township the most severe citation possible after James Farrell was buried alive when attempting to fix a broken water main on Jan. 24. He died four days later at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. The Grosse Ile Department of Public Services received a willful citation amounting to $49,000 and three other lesser citations amounting to more than $10,000. Township Supervisor Brian Loftus said officials disagreed with several aspects of the MiOSHA findings. Township attorney Thomas Esordi was unavailable for comment Friday afternoon. For …

Update: Investigation Into Grosse Ile Man's Workplace Death

Grosse Ile employee James Farrell died on Jan. 28 after he was buried alive attempting to fix a broken water main for the Township of Grosse Ile.

Township officials said the investigation into James Farrell's death continued Friday, with no immediate end in sight. Farrell was buried under nearly two feet of mud and water for nearly 14 minutes after a trench dug to fix a broken water main collapsed on top of him on Jan. 24. He died four days later at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Township Supervisor Brian Loftus said he and other township officials received an oral briefing on the investigation early this week, but could not discuss details discussed in the briefing. Officials from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) are conducting the investigation to find out what caused the trench to collapse. Grosse Ile Employee Injured in Cave-in Dies

James Farrell, Grosse Ile resident and public works employee, died at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Monday night.

Grosse Ile Department of Public Works employee James Farrell, who was injured on the job in a cave-in last week, died Monday night, according to Township Supervisor Brian Loftus. Farrell was 56. Trenton public safety officials said Farrell was buried under nearly two feet of mud and water for nearly 14 minutes after a trench dug to fix a broken water main collapsed Thursday morning. Farrell was airlifted to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he remained until his death. "Jim was just a genuinely good guy," Loftus said. This is so sad but the reality of such accidents. Now the family suffers the loss of a loved one. Co-workers and friends have to deal with this devastating loss. Officials Begin Investigation Into Injury to Grosse Ile Employee (Updated)

A Grosse Ile employee died after being buried alive while attempting to fix a broken water main Thursday.

An investigation into a job site cave-in, which lead to the death of a Grosse Ile public works employee, began Friday after crews filled in a 12-foot deep hole where the man was buried alive. The 56-year-old islander was not breathing and did not have a pulse when he was pulled from the hole were he was attempting to fix a broken water main Thursday, officials said. Emergency personnel later revived him. The water main located just a few feet off Meridian Road near Bridge Road was fixed by a private contractor and filled in Friday morning, according to Grosse Ile Police Chief Joseph Porcerelli. I think when this investigation is complete it will put blame on the township. Although they will find plenty of blame to go around. It's such a tragic accident that could very well have been prevented. I just hope the GI worker pulls through.   more ›

A Grosse Ile public works employee was airlifted to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit after being buried alive while attempting to fix a broken water main Thursday.

A Grosse Ile man who spent nearly 14 minutes buried beneath water, mud and clay while attempting to fix a broken water main was still in critical condition Monday. The 56-year-old employee of the Grosse Ile Department of Public Works remains unconscious. His status has not changed since he was resuscitated by emergency personnel on the island and airlifted to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit on Thursday, according to Grosse Ile police. Two DPW employees who are also trained volunteer firefighters were at the site at the time a hole dug to fix the water main collapsed around the man. A Grosse Ile employee remains in critical condition after being buried alive while attempting to fix a broken water main Thursday near Meridian Road. Grosse Ile Police Chief Joseph Porcerelli said the 56-year-old department of public works employee was still unconcious Friday morning. The man, a lifelong resident of Grosse Ile, was air lifted to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit after being resuscitated by Grosse Ile and Trenton emergency personnel.
