A teacher at Boyd W. Arthurs Middle School was recently honored by the City of Trenton and the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association.
In the last year, Trenton teacher Aaron Segedi received the Service Before Self and the Paul Harris awards from the City of Trenton and the Assistant Coach of the Year award from the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. Segedi, 36, a teacher at Boyd W. Arthurs Middle School, was featured in articles on the Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch, Huffington Post Magazine and Athletic Management Magazine. He was also invited to sit in on a podcast for FootballCoachingPodcast.com. Through all of the recognition and national notoriety, Segedi said he remains focused on the idea that put his name on the tips of the tongues of hundreds of high school coaches across the country--Victory Day. Since Segedi created Victory Day in 2009, his idea has …

The sound of banging drums and speakers echoing into the sky took over Farrer Field on Saturday for a football game unlike any other played this season. Much of the day was filled with sounds normally heard at a football game except the crack of a tackle was replaced with the sound of children laughing and realizing a lifelong dream of playing football—it was Victory Day. Victory Day, created by Trenton High School football Coach Aaron Segedi, gives special needs children a chance to score a touchdown, with all the fanfare of a real game. Lloyd Carr, former head football coach for the University of Michigan, kicked the day off with a stirring tribute to Victory Day. "It's not only growing here, but throughout this state and across the …

Representatives from Nike, in association with Team Sports Inc., have agreed to provide football jerseys, complete with embroidered names and Victory Day logo, and footballs to every student participating in this year's event.
New football jerseys to be given away to special needs students at Victory Day are expected to have a newly designed Victory Day logo and a Nike "swoosh." After weeks of designing, the Victory Day logo was completed just under two months from the big day. The logo, featuring a person in full football gear catching a football, a cheerleader and a marching band member, is expected to be featured on the jersey and on medals to be given away at the event. Nike agreed to sponsor the event reducing the cost of each jersey from $50 to almost nothing. Last year, over 60 students from the Jo Brighton Skills Center, Lincoln Center and Madison School in Wyandotte participated in the event. Victory Day allows special needs students and opportunity to …

A local coach's idea has grown to be one of the year's biggest events in Trenton.
Victory Day has grown from a local coach's modest idea in 2010 to a can't miss event that has recently drawn interest from Nike. While Nike provides Victory Day with support and recognition, the event is seeking sponsorship on a number of levels. Last year, former University of Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr attended the event. Carr has already agreed to make the same commitment for this year's Victory Day. Trenton teacher and football coach Aaron Segedi initially created Victory Day as a way to build character in his athletes, but the event has far exceeded his expectations. Segedi's Victory Day committee called the one-day event "an afternoon of education, inspiration and fun on the gridiron for cognitively and physically impaired …

Victory Day now has a website where people can learn about sponsorship, ask questions and look at photos of previous games.
The idea for Victory Day came to Trenton teacher Aaron Segedi after watching the ESPN channel, and since its inception Victory Day has grown exponentially almost entirely by word of mouth--alone. Those days are long gone. Victory Day is taking its message to the Internet with a new website designed to promote and inform people about the big day. The website, www.victorydayfootball.com, allows Victory Day fans an opportunity to look at photos of past games, get information on sponsorships, read articles written about Victory Day, learn the history of the big day and contact organizers. In other Victory Day news, more schools have expressed interest in beginning their own Victory Day including Sandusky Catholic Central and Rossford High …
