Popular 90s Sitcom Inspired Name of Coffee House Coming to Trenton

A new coffee shop is expected to open near the end of July in Downtown Trenton near Elizabeth Park.

A popular 1990s sitcom inspired the name of a new coffee house coming to Downtown Trenton--located across the street from Elizabeth Park. Elizabeth Perk Coffee House, 2775 W. Jefferson Ave., is expected to open at the end of July. Owner Mark Hayes, 41, of Grosse Ile, said, while he wasn't a huge fan of the show, the name of the coffee house on the NBC show "Friends" always stuck out to him. "The name of my coffee house was inspired by Central Perk--the coffee house on 'Friends,'" Hayes said. The fictional coffee house, Central Perk, was located near Central Park in New York, NY and Hayes said the similarities between locations made naming his business a no-brainer. New Coffee House in Downtown Trenton to Retain Historical Significance

The interior design of a new coffee house in Downtown Trenton is expected to showcase Trenton's rich history through historic photographs. Mark Hayes, 41, of Grosse Ile, plans to open a coffee house in the former A&W building, which he purchased last week. Hayes said he hopes people will rekindle old traditions--started before the A&W closed three years ago--and begin new traditions at his coffee house. "I want to focus on Trenton's historic value," Hayes said. Hayes is part-owner of Dotte Pub in Wyandotte, where he and his two business partners spent nearly $70,000 restoring the old Edinger Hotel bar to its former glory. Former A&W Sold: New Business Coming to Downtown Trenton

The former A&W is expected to be transformed into a new business by July.

The former A&W restaurant in Downtown Trenton was recently sold. Local businessman and coffee lover Mark Hayes, 41, of Grosse Ile, purchased the property and plans to turn the former burger joint into a coffee shop. Hayes said he plans to sell Crimson Cup brand coffee. Crimson Cup, based in Columbus, OH, sells only the top 5 percent of coffee beans harvested around the world, according to the Crimson Cup website. Hayes said his passion for coffee inspired him to open a coffee shop near his home. "I love coffee," Hayes said. "I'm always looking for the best cup of coffee." Grosse Ile Businessman: Sale of Former A&W Rejected Despite Best Efforts

Grosse Ile businessman Mark Hayes placed an offer on the former A&W property in Downtown Trenton, which was rejected by the property owner.

Grosse Ile businessman Mark Hayes, 41, recently made an offer on the former A&W property in Downtown Trenton, but the offer was rejected. While he would not disclose the offer amount, Hayes said he offered the property owner more than $55,000, which is the price for which the owners paid for the property in 2009. "I made them a very lucrative, cash offer," Hayes said. "I was willing to close in two weeks and they rejected it." Hayes said the offer was rejected despite Trenton city officials' best efforts. "The City of Trenton was more than willing to work with me," Hayes said. "They want to see someone in that spot." Trenton Official: Sale of Former A&W Rejected

A local businessman attempted to purchase the former A&W restaurant located across the street from Elizabeth Park in Downtown Trenton.

Residents and others interested in sipping gourmet coffee from a Michigan-born business at the former A&W site in Downtown Trenton--won't get that chance. A recent attempt to purchase the property and transform the former restaurant into a new Bearclaw Coffee Co. location was rejected, according to Trenton City Administrator Jim Wagner. Local businessman Mark Hayes recently made an offer to the real estate company responsible for the property, Signature Associates, which was met with a counter offer. Hayes submitted a counter offer of his own and the sale was rejected. Wagner would not say how much Hayse offered for the property, but did say "he offered more money than the owner paid for it." What Do You Want to Replace the Old A&W in Trenton?

The A&W on West Jefferson Avenue has been closed for years. What would you like to see take its place?

It's been a long time since anyone served a steaming hot chilidog with a side of cheesy chili fries at the now closed A&W at 2975 W Jefferson Ave. Perhaps, some residents have grown to accept the empty building just steps away from Elizabeth Park, but not Trenton Patch. No chance. We want to know what you'd like to see take the place of the old A&W in Trenton? To get the ball rolling, I'm going to offer up my suggestion: a rental shop where park goers can rent outdoor equipment like kayaks, scooters and bicycles. Remember, there is no wrong answer and you can add as many suggestions as you like. Have fun with it and let's see where this goes. I would like to see it reopen since my parents owned it for 27 years and my husband Denny & I owned it for 6 years before we moved to AZ. and bought an A&W in 1986. Maybe we should bring it back to the "good old days ". We are the ones to do it !   more ›
