Where's the Best Pizza in Metro Detroit?

A national best pizza list includes pizzerias in Macomb, Detroit and Ann Arbor but snubs regional favorites like Supino and Buddy's.

Food website The Daily Meal recently published a list of the 101 Best Pizzas in America, and gave several shout-outs to Detroit, referencing Detroit-style pizza, and mentioning that "There are great pies being made in Michigan."

The site even highlighted the fact that its list does not include some of the most beloved pizzerias in Metro Detroit, saying readers might "demand to know how SupinoBuddy's, and Green Lantern Lounge were all missed."

So which pizza places in southeast Michigan did make the cut?

Macomb County's Cloverleaf pizza, "the original Detroit-style pizza" (the owners opened the first Buddy's in 1946, but then sold the restaurant in 1953) came in at number 99 and Nikki's in Detroit's Greektown was ranked 81st.

Mani Osteria & Bar in Ann Arbor was the highest-ranked Michigan pizzeria on the list, coming in at number 80.

"One reason why? The beautiful leopard-spotted crusts around the edges of the 12-inch Neapolitan pies churned out of Mani’s wood-fired ovens," the article said.

It also praised the restaurant's burrata and balsamic pizza, and "nuanced pies" that use ingredients like scamorza, chile pesto, and black truffles.
