Movement to Restore Monument Nearing Deadline

You may not know what the tall, green markers at mean or what they represent, but the Monguagon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) know the markers well, and have begun a movement to restore one marker in particular.

Members of the chapter are attempting to raise funds to refurbish the War of 1812 "Battle of Monguagon Marker" located on the perimeter of Elizabeth Park by the comfort station on West Jefferson, north of the Grosse Ile free bridge.

The monument was first dedicated in 1962, according to a release from the DAR, and the daughters hope to have a re-dedication ceremony on Aug. 9, 2012, in honor of the 200th anniversary of the battle.

The Monguagon Chapter plans to apply for a matching grant to restore the marker and improve the marker's surrounding landscaping.

The application date for the grant is Feb. 1 and members of the chapter hope to receive as many donations and pledges as possible before Jan. 27. The deadline to donate or pledge is April 1.

Chapter members said without the help of the Downriver communities the project will not be possible.
