Trojans Finish Best Season in Years, Head Coach to Retire

Prior to this season, the last time the Trenton High School boys basketball team won a district title was in 1991, which was 13 years before head coach Rick Morrow took the reigns.

After eight seasons as the Trojans' head coach, Morrow is retiring.

Morrow said he decided to retire before the start of one of his most successful seasons as head coach.

Morrow said he helped turn an unsuccessful basketball program into a winning program that won a district title Monday in Flat Rock.

Morrow's Trojans lost to the Detroit Community High School Hurricanes in the regional finals Wednesday night. The Trojans finished the season 19-6.

Morrow said he's enjoyed the last 26 years of coaching basketball at St. Pius School in Southgate, Cabrini High School in Allen Park and Trenton High School, but budget cuts have made the job more difficult than ever before.

"It's a different situation now in coaching where you're part fundraiser and part coach, because there are no budgets for athletics," Morrow said. "As much as I love the coaching part of the game, it (fund raising) takes your whole year away."

The 60-year-old said he's ready to spend more time with his family and "start laying on a beach in Florida."

District officials had not selected a new coach to fill Morrow's spot Thursday.

Morrow suggested placing boys junior varsity head coach Jay Babyak; who also happens to be Morrow's son-in-law.

"Jay is an excellent guy and the kids love him," Morrow said.

Whomever the coach may be, Morrow said next season will likely be a rebuilding one.

There are just two players returning next season, with seven seniors graduating.
