Trenton Wrestler Markowsky Fights Back for 8th Place in State

Teammate Tom Stackpole goes home early after two losses in a row.

AUBURN HILLS – Warren Markowsky came back after an opening-round loss to earn a spot on the podium Saturday and an eighth place finish in the MHSAA Division 2 individual wrestling finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Markowsky lost to Thursday to Gabe Morse of Lowell, 16-1 by T-Fall, but came back to win his next two matches.

The Trenton senior lost to Travis Dragomer of Stevensville Lakeshore, 8-2 by decision, then to Jesse Smith of Warren Lincoln in the battle for seventh place.

Meanwhile, junior Tom Stackpole's state finals experience didn't go as planned.

He was eliminated on Friday morning in a 12-8 loss to Hamilton senior Will Braschler. Braschler gained an advantage with near falls in both round two and three.

Stackpole executed offense throughout the match, but left himself open for a couple of big takedowns. In the second round, he spent nearly 40 seconds with one and a half shoulders on the mat. He just was able to turn his head and keep from getting pinned.

The same thing happened in the third round.
