Moms Talk Q&A: Should High School Kids Receive Sex Ed in Trenton Public Schools?

In accordance with the State School Aid Act Trenton High School officials are set to teach students about several sex-related topics.

Dr. Michael Doyle of Trenton Public Schools sent a letter to parents Tuesday detailing the sexual education lesson scheduled for April 13 at the Trenton High School auditorium.

The letter stated the lesson would include information regarding “dangerous communicable diseases, including, but not limited to, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)."

The discussion, according to state guidelines, also will include these topics:

  • Having sex or sexual contact with an individual under the age of 16 is a crime punishable by imprisonment, and a result of being convicted of this crime is to be listed on the State of Michigan sex offender registry on the Internet for at least 25 years.
  • Computer predators.
  • Information on how young parents can learn more about adoption services, and provisions for the safe delivery of newborns.

The lessons will be presented by the school nurse and a member of the Trenton High School counseling staff, Kathleen McPartlin, and a representative of the Trenton Police Department.
