District Saves $127K in Estimated Transportation Costs at Trenton Public Schools

Dean Transportation reduced estimated transportation costs at Trenton Public Schools by identifying inefficiencies.

Outsourcing transportation might have saved Trenton Public Schools more than $127,000 during the 2012-13 school year, according to cost estimates provided by the Trenton Public School District.

Trenton officials voted in favor of outsourcing busing to Dean Transportation in July 2012. During the 2012-13 school year, district officials said the switch cost less than anticipated.

District officials estimated the first year of transportation with Dean Transportation to cost about $1 million including anticipated fuel costs. Officials at Dean Transportation found inefficiencies in transportation and reduced the cost by about 13 percent for the 2012-13 school year.

Dean Transportation reduced transportation costs by:

  • Combining two special education runs.
  • Regular education runs were revised in February 2013 and implemented after the mid-winter break, which resulted in the elimination of a middle school run.
  • Routes longer than the three-hour contractual minimum were reviewed and revised to reduce run times.

If not for rising fuel costs, the district would have saved about 14 percent on transportation compared to estimates made before the school year began.
