Board of Education Agenda Preview: June 13

Highlights from the agenda for Monday's board of education meeting at 6:30 p.m.

The regularly scheduled Trenton Public Schools Board of Education meeting for 6:30 p.m. Monday has some hot items on the agenda.

  • John Savel, superintendent of Trenton Public Schools, is set to officially "after completing outstanding service to the Trenton Public Schools from July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2011."
  • Board members will vote to approve changes to the Career Technology Education Program at . The changes would reduce the number of classes currently available for Auto Service Technology from four to three and change  the available credits for the course.
  • A proposed increase in athletic participation fees. Board members would vote to increase athletic participation fees for the 2011-12 school year from $115 to $130 per sport at Trenton High School and from $65 to $80 per sport at effective July 1, 2011.
  • The millage levy will be considered and according to the agenda for the 2011-12 school year: a millage rate of 3.8687 mills for general operating purposes shall be levied on the taxable value of all principal residences, qualified agricultural property and industrial personal property located within the school district; a millage rate of 9.8687 mills for general operating purposes shall be levied on the taxable value of all commercial personal property located within the school district and a millage rate of 18.0000 mills for general operating purposes shall be levied on the taxable value of all other nonhomestead property located within the school district. Also, that the number of mills from which principal residences, qualified agricultural property, industrial personal property and commercial personal property in the school district are exempt from the school district’s operating millage levy be and the same hereby is reduced by 3.8687 mills for the 2011-12 school year. Finally, that for the 2011-12 school year, a millage rate of 3.10 mills for debt retirement shall be levied on the taxable value of all classifications of property located within the school district.
  • The approval of the 2011-12 budgets. General Operations Fund: Total Revenue $23, 422,844 and Total Expenditures $24,380,927, with an estimated Fund Balance of $1,888,476 as of July 1, 2011.
  • Starting day for the 2011-12 school year. The anticipated start day and time for Trenton Public Schools is Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, for morning classes only. Classes for all pupils in morning and full-day kindergarten and grades one through five will begin at 8:35 a.m. and end at 11:55 a.m. Classes for students in grades six, seven and eight will begin at 8:10 a.m. and end at 11:10 a.m. Students in grades nine, 10, 11 and 12 will have classes beginning at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 10:30 a.m. according to the agenda.
  • Approval of Chartwells food service for the 2011-12 school year to continue the outsourcing of its Food Service Operations for the 2011-12 school year to the Chartwells Division of Compass Group USA as approved by the Michigan Department of Education.
