The Trenton Board of Education regularly scheduled meeting came to order at 6:04 p.m. Monday at the Board of Education building.

  • Update on bond-approved building improvements: Representatives from French Associates Inc. (architect), McCarthy & Smith Inc. (construction manager) and/or Plante & Moran Inc. (technology consultant) will be present to update the board on bond-approved building and technology improvements.

Representatives from French Associates, Inc. (architect), McCarthy & Smith, Inc. (construction manager), and/or Plante & Moran, Inc. (technology consultant) who are all working on the bond issue building repairs and renewals at district schools said the work is "coming along good." 

One of the representatives highlighted a few areas in which the contractors are working and informed the board that many o fthe general construction items would be completed May 9 and the entire scope of work he said should be resolved by the end of May. However, some of the items do not have a completion date.

The initial budget for the projects was $38 million and the new proposed budget remains the same.

The district technology updates are not yet complete, but much of the work is close to completion.

There are some significant changes in technology in the district. Some of the changes include changing from Macs to PCs at Arthur's Middle School, Windows 7 on all PCs and shared and backed up file storage.

Board member Marie Conflitti asked if there is a probem with new equipment at the teaching level, who does that teacher report to? A representative responded that once the equipment is signed off, the tacher reporrs to the district, unless there is something wrong with the item. If the item is defective the complaint would go toward the warranty of the product.

"Sometimes we have user issues where it is not the technology at all," a representative of Plante Moran said.

"It's still not there, but we think we are getting much closer."

President Dennis Bearden incouraged teachers to take the time to report an issues with the new technology.

Board members approved the presentation.

7:07 p.m.

  • Superintendent's Report:

Superintendent John Savel addressed the recent bomb threat at Trenton High School commend ing the teachers, students and staff at the high school. He also commended Chief William Lilianthal of the Trenton Police Department and Trenton Mayor Gerald Brown.

He addressed the issue of a recent TV news report that claimed the package found at the high school was an explosive device, but he assured people, with information from Lilianthal as early as Monday morning, that the package has not yet been identified.

Trenton High School Athletics' Golf Outing raised $5000.

Anderson Elementary School to receive a flag for being a Michigan Green School.

  • Public Participation:

Several members of the audience spoke about being unhappy with budget cuts and increased class sizes.

8:21 p.m.

  • Fall 2010 Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) test results:

The district had the results back on March 30 and are now reporting them. The results can be found on www.boarddocs.com.

  • Resolution to support/disapprove the Wayne RESA preliminary 2011-12 general fund operating budget: Board members disaproved the budget with a objection to the Wayne RESA board increasing board expenses.
  • Valedictorian and salutatorian recommendation: Beginning with the class of 2015, Trenton High School changes from the recognition of valedictorians and salutatorians to Senior Scholars; and that students be recognized in the graduation ceremony as honor roll, cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude based on grade point averages.

The item was passed unanimously.

9:18 p.m.

  • Interns' recommendations on elimination of administrative position and administrative reassignment to Anderson Elementary School—Mr. Wakeham and Mr. Porreca.

Both measures were passed unanimously.

  • Discussion of the 2011-2012 draft budgets:

There were no new discussions on the budget.

  • Recognition of the top 10 students of the Trenton High School class of 2011.
