SOUND OFF: What Type of Business Would You Like to See Occupy the Old Wyandotte City Hall?

Some people have suggested a parking garage, an indoor market and a theater. What do you think?

Now that city officials are considering the idea of demolishing the old Wyandotte City Hall, we asked our readers on Facebook what type of establishment they'd like to see built on the property.

Barb Duran, who chairs the city's Zoning Board of Appeals and Adjustments, said the spot is perfect for parking.

"A 3-story parking garage," she wrote. "(It) wouldn't be much higher than the existing building and would alleviate the parking problems in downtown Wyandotte as well as attract more people to the restaurants and bars and shops since there will be ample parking right smack in the middle of downtown. The facade that faces Biddle could be required to be an attractive design and style to fit in with the downtown architecture as well as hide any view of automobiles from Biddle Avenue. The city could also determine whether or not to charge a fee for parking in order to increase revenue for the city."

Troy Huffaker of Dtl Herbs, who is a regular vendor at the Wyandotte Farmers Market, said the space could be used to enhance the market.

"I propose that the building be turned over to the DDA for development into an indoor bazaar/market where producers of Michigan made products, particularly those loyal vendors who have supported the Wyandotte Farmers Market, would have a place, year round, to bring their fine products to the people of Wyandotte," he wrote.

Other suggestions included Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Buffalo Wild Wings, a movie theater and high-rise condos.

Not a Wy resident, but I spend my money in the city. Why build at all? Leave the space open and let it be a green space. Erect a covered area, so people can sit and have their coffee or eat even if it's raining. Put it up in a way that birds cannot nest underneath. The area across the street by the clock tower is nice, but it's not shaded. Though the parking lot is behind, it is still a view to the river, which there is very little of anymore.

Bookstore--bad idea. Due to e-readers like the Kindle, bookstores will soon be gone the way of Harmony House don't you read the newspapers?....Barnes and Noble is struggling to stay alive, and you guys want a bookstore? Apple would be nice, but they'd never open a store here. They will only open in malls where Lord & Taylor is an anchor store. That information is available if you look deeply into the Internet for the info. That's why Apple is in Somerset in Troy, Lord & Taylor is there. I have read online that Apple won't go into Fairlane Mall because they have the Somerset store and also their store in Ann Arbor at Briarwood Mall. Apple never answers people's mail....Whole Foods is too expensive...maybe there are some seniors in Wyandotte who can afford to pay Whole Foods' prices, but most won't want to. Frankly, I would like to see some shops in this space, if there has to be something other than green space. Maybe the space would be divided up to make an inside 'mall' area. I'd like to see a nice shop for women who wear Plus size clothing (very little available downriver). Also, a shop for all sizes of athletic wear, like yoga clothing and running clothing and shoes, stuff like that. Those are just two ideas. Wyandotte doesn't need more coffee shops, salons, art-centric shops, restaurants or bars. Wyandotte needs something no one else has....
