VIDEO: Student Government Day at Trenton City Hall

Students from Trenton Public Schools gathered at City Hall for Student Government Day.

Students pushed Trenton city officials aside and completely took over Wednesday during Student Government Day.

The event lasted from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and more than 30 students served as mayor, city council members, city clerk, school board and more.

senior Natalie Dumais served as mayor for the day and said she thought the experience was educational and fun.

Mayor Gerald Brown welcomed students as they had coffee, juice and doughnuts, and students introduced themselves and announced the roles they would be taking over for the day.

Next, students followed their respective city employee or official around to get a better idea of what they do day-to-day. They also reviewed an agenda and discussed their individual roles during a City Council meeting.

The day culminated in a mock City Council meeting in City Hall Council Chambers where students representing all city departments, including fire, police, and parks and recreation, presented agenda items to council members for action.

After the mock meeting students were invited to have lunch at the with city officials and employees.
