Trenton Wildlife Refuge Groundbreaking Set for Friday

An open house is set from noon to 2 p.m., followed by the groundbreaking.

A groundbreaking for the new Visitor Center at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge in Trenton is set for Friday.

The event was initially scheduled for Oct. 16, but was postponed due to the federal government shutdown.

“The partnerships we’ve been able to build throughout Southeast Michigan and with our friends in Canada have helped to grow the Refuge to more than 17,000 acres of preserved wildlife," U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-12th District) said in a written statement last month. "I’m proud of what we have been able to accomplish together, and look forward to taking part in this important groundbreaking event soon.”A new date hasn't yet been announced.

An open house is set from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, followed by the 2 p.m. groundbreaking.

The event, which is open to the public, is taking place at 5437 W. Jefferson Ave.
