The Michigan Department of Natural Resources plans to award Trenton $45,000 in grant funds for park improvements.

Trenton received notification from the department of natural resources on Friday, Dec. 6. The grant was approved for $45,000 to make improvements to Haas Park, Joann Gonyea, director of parks and recreation, said today.

“Improvement plans include: a picnic shelter and playground, as well as some paths that connect park facilities, such as the baseball field,” Gonyea said.

Gonyea says project funding will be combined from sales of the Recreation Passport, and a $50,000 grant from Wayne County Parks and Recreation. The county grant was postponed a year in order to obtain the DNR funds.

Trenton is one of 19 communities eligible to share $761,600 in grant funds.

But Gonyea said there are still a few more steps to make it official.

“The city needs to formally accept the award. And then we also have to enter into a project agreement with the DNR,” she said.

Over the next couple months, the city will be developing specifications in order to “get some competitive bids on the project.”

Grant entries were chosen from a field of 87 applications seeking some $3.2 million in funding.
