Ficano, Palamara Hand Over Marina to Trenton

Wayne County Commissioner Joseph Palamara and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano were in Trenton to officially hand over the reigns of the Elizabeth Park Marina to city administrators.

came in March 2011 when Wayne County Parks Director Beverly Watts approached Trenton administrators.

Watts said the marina was losing money for Wayne County and Trenton administrators thought the idea could benefit the city.

"We are very grateful that the city said yes," Palamara said.

Palamara said he is also looking forward to restoring the "iconic bridges" at .

"We are this close to having the work start," Palamara said.

He added the contract to begin working on the bridges was approved about a year ago, but the project was "held up by the Army Corps of Engineers because of the waterways it transcends and, most recently, by the State Historical Preservation Office."

Palamara said the parties are very close to finalizing the plans and work should begin on the bridges in March.

"We're hoping that people can go back there and take those wedding pictures and prom pictures and everything else that you've done...we're really looking forward to the restoration of those bridges, and the continued upkeep of the park as it's been our jewel Downriver and we're very proud that it's right here in Trenton," Palamara said.

Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack thanked the men for coming to the meeting and the people involved in the process of allowing Trenton to handle the marina.

Stack said city administrators would be working closely with the Wayne County Parks System to ensure the marina continues to run smoothly.
