Jamboree on Ice Is Back

The Kennedy Recreation Center is hosting the 45th Annual Jamboree on Ice on March 31 and April 1 and 2.

The Trenton Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating its 45th year of Jamboree on Ice on March 31 and April 1 and 2.

More than 100 figure skaters from Trenton and the surrounding communities will participate in a showcase of skill and talent at the Kennedy Recreation Center in Trenton.

The theme of the jamboree this year is “Ballroom Blitz” with a variety of skating styles according to Joann Perna, assistant director of parks and recreation.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to get out there and skate and get in costume and showcase their abilities,” Perna said.

Perna called the show “one of the best Downriver” and said skaters from preschoolers to adults are set to take the ice.

According to Perna the show is a celebration of the progress the recreational skaters have made over the year.

“It runs the gamut of skating abilities,” Perna said.

The skaters have practiced for countless hours to prepare for the event. Some of the skaters had to audition in order to be selected to execute a solo performance.

“I think people look forward to all of the numbers (of skaters) and the solos are a nice addition and it’s a nice variety, and it really showcases the talent we have in our show,” Perna said.

Participants, other than solo performers, became eligible to skate in Jamboree on Ice by taking figure skating classes at Kennedy Recreation Center under the tutelage of Ice Show Director Stephanie Galuska.

This year marks Galuska’s 10th year directing the event.

Performances are scheduled March 31 and April 1 at 7 p.m.  A matinee performance is scheduled April 2 beginning at 1:30 p.m. with an additional  evening performance at 7:30 p.m.
