Council Tables Proposed Alcohol Ordinance for Kennedy Center

Trenton City Council members requested a study session to discuss a proposed amendment to a city ordinance that would restrict the sale, consumption or possession of alcohol on the lower level of the .

The proposed amendment was on the agenda for a first reading at Monday's regularly scheduled city council meeting.

Council members tabled the agenda item to a study session for further discussion.

Councilwoman MaryEllen McLeod said she did not support the amendment.

"I guess, what I want is some rational behind this," McLeod said. "I thought that when we spoke about it at the last study session, we talked about wanting an opportunity to do fundraising events or things where the city was involved and not precluding any activity like this.

According to city attorney Wallace Long, proposed ordinance 762 is to amend section 6.1 of the city code to add a prohibition on the consumption of alcohol in public parks and public places to include the first floor of the Kennedy Recreation Center.

The amendment would not include the mezzanine level, which is home to . Alcohol consumption would be permitted on the second floor of the Kennedy Center.
