City to Apply for Grant for Playground Equipment, Shelter at Haas Park

New park amenities would replace the Haas Park Building, which was scheduled for demolition earlier this year.

Trenton council members approved a grant application to upgrade with new playground equipment and picnic shelter at Monday night's city council meeting.

City officials have applied for $50,000 through the Wayne County Park Millage Grant for improvements to the park.

The new amenities would replace the community building that is no longer in use. The earlier this year, but the city engineer and building department have not had time to follow through with the demolition, according to City Administrator Jim Wagner.

Trenton Patch erroneously reported the grant was to be used to refurbish the Haas Park Building. The building will be demolished, but an exact date has not been set.

Joann Perna, director of parks and recreation, said costs for demolition would come from general fund balance and not from the grant.

She added, if Trenton is awarded the grant, volunteers would be used to build the new equipment to reduce the total cost of the improvements, so more money could be spent on equipment.
