City Officials Give Riverside Property Owner Deadline for Abatement

Trenton officials gave the owner of the former Riverside Hospital an ultimatum Wednesday afternoon.

Officials set a deadline for Iqbal Nasir to begin demolition and abatement at the property by May 15 during a Brownfield Authority meeting at city hall.

Nasir said he would get the abatement started as quickly as possible, and people will be in the building working by the deadline.

Nasir added he plans to move his personal office from its current location on Allen Road to building nearest to West Jefferson, after construction is completed.

While Nasir did not give a date of completion, he did say the abatement should be completed by the end of the year.

"It has to be internally demolished and then you go in and build, so I don't know a real time frame for that," Nasir said.

Trenton administration will continue to pursue a court order to gain access to the property for inspection purposes.

Councilman Terry Teifer said if Nasir does not show significant progress at the property by the deadline, city officials would begin the legal process of condemning the building.

"If we have to, we'll condemn it and tear it down," Teifer said.
