City Clerk Anticipates Low Voter Turnout for Primary

About 27 percent of voters turned out for the 2008 presidential primary and Trenton City Clerk Trish Gearhart anticipates far less this time around.

Less than 15 percent of registered voters in Trenton are expected to make it to the polls on Tuesday, Feb. 28, according to Trenton City Clerk Trish Gearhart.

Gearhart said 27 percent of registered Trenton voters showed up for the 2008 presidential primary, and she anticipates far less next week.

She added Trenton residents usually vote Democratic, but has noticed an increase in Republican votes in recent years.

In the 2008 Presidential Primary, the top two vote getters from each party were Democrat Hilary Clinton with 1,180 votes and Republican Mitt Romney with 955 votes. Gearhart said she anticipates even higher Republican votes this time around.

Gearhart said 1,355 absentee ballots were mailed out, and she has received about 1,051. (Or about 78 percent of the ballots have been turned in.)

Voters with absentee ballots can bring ballots to Trenton City Hall from now until polls close on Tuesday. Absentee ballots will be counted after the polls close.
