Are You Sick of Hearing Fireworks at All Hours of the Night?

Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack has received several complaints regarding fireworks, since purchasing consumer fireworks was made legal in Michigan about a year ago.

Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack said residents' complaints and the anticipation of a new state fireworks law led to a new ordinance restricting firework use.

The proposed state law would allow any city, township or village to enact an ordinance banning overnight use of consumer fireworks on the day before, of or after a national holiday, according to MLive.com.

The proposed city ordinance is directly in line with the state law.

Stack said the ordinance is a proactive measure taken in anticipation of the implementation of the new state law, which is awaiting Gov. Rick Snyder's signature.

Stack said she's received several complaints regarding fireworks, since purchasing consumer fireworks was made legal in Michigan May 2012.

Stack received complaints about fireworks being used at all hours of the night including several complaints from residents whose dogs became frightened by the noise.

"Dogs jump fences because they're afraid of the fireworks," Stack said. "Celebration is a good thing, but, in excess, it's a little too much," Stack said.

Violations could be punishable by up to 30 days in jail or a fine of up to $500.

Trenton city council members are expected to vote on the ordinance at Monday's regularly scheduled city council meeting at 8 p.m. at Trenton City Hall.
