2011 Trenton Easter Egg Hunt Ushers in Spring

Hundreds of little ones are expected to attend the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

On Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m., more than 400 boys and girls will descend upon the grounds of the for Trenton’s annual rite of spring: the 2011 Easter egg hunt.

With Easter baskets in hand, the children, who are split into four age groups, will attempt to see how many eggs they can collect in a certain amount of time.

“It’s controlled chaos,” said Ganesa Wegienka, a member of the Trenton Civic Commission.

In addition to finding the colored eggs, two golden eggs will be hidden among the rest to be found by the lucky kids.

“The parents tend to like this event because it’s well-organized,” said Wegienka. “It’s more like a scramble among the kids, and everyone gets the same goody bag.”

Nobody really knows how long this event has been in existence, but it has been around for at least a decade. The Trenton Jaycees were the first group to put it on, and then the Civic Commission took over when the Trenton Jaycees chapter disbanded.

Volunteers from the Trenton Civic Commission and Monroe Bank and Trust will be on hand to assist in the proceedings, helping to pass out the goody bags and refreshments and clean up afterward.

The Easter egg hunt will take place, rain or shine, the day after the Wayne County Parks 2011 Marshmallow Drop at Elizabeth Park, and it is usually a low-key response to the craziness of the marshmallow drop.

“The egg hunt is our quiet little event,” says Wegienka. “We are usually done in less than 30 minutes.”

Children who attend the event will have the opportunity to take their picture with the Easter bunny.

They will be broken out into the following age groups: 0-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-plus.
