Viewfinder: Trenton Heats Up at Fire Ops 101

Trenton Patch editor Nate Stemen suited up in firefighter gear and wielded a fire hose to help put out raging fires Saturday at Fire Ops 101 held at Wayne County Community College District

This was the second year for the event where local news media, politicians and business representatives came together to experience firefighter training firsthand.

The Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union and the Downriver Fire Fighters Union hosted the daylong program at the Michigan Institute for Public Safety Education on the Wayne County Community College Downriver Campus. Firefighters from , Taylor, Lincoln Park and Brownstown fire departments were the instructors and organizers of the event.

Guests suited up in firefighter protective clothing, used a self-contained breathing apparatus, participated in extinguishing live fires and participated in a simulated ambulance run.

Each silmulation was performed in a supervised and controlled environment.

Guests were able to extinguish simulated ship and car fires, participate in a simulated automobile rescue by using the Jaws of Life, participate in the simulated rescue of a patient from the second floor of a building and ride in the bucket of a 100-foot ladder attached to a firetruck.

The course was designed to help people see and feel what firefighters experience on a daily basis.
