Savel said the police arrived at the school and cordoned off a 12-space section of the parking lot about three rows long and four spaces wide where the package was found.

Students had already been released from the building at the end of the school day, but the girls tennis team was playing in a tennis match at the time of the incident.

Savel said police and administration kept the safety of students, staff, parents and the community at the forefront of the investigation and "at no time was anybody in any danger."

Teachers whose cars were parked near the package were told to move their cars to allow officers to perform an investigation.

According to Savel, the Wayne County Airport Authority's Explosives Ordinance Disposal unit came to the school to "disintegrate" the package by shooting water at it at a high rate of speed.

He added police then collected the remains of the package to be sent to a police lab so they can investigate further.

The scene was then cleaned and Savel said police left the parking lot at about 7:30 p.m.

School was not canceled on Friday and Savel said the attendance rate was normal.

"This is a good example of when everyone works together," Savel said. "I would like to commend the Trenton Police Department, Mayor Gerald Brown and the Wayne County Airport Authority."

Police had not released any further information as of 3 p.m. Friday, and students returned to school Friday morning.
