Trenton Police Rescue Man Suffering Medical Emergency While Driving

Officers of the likely saved a man's life Monday after the man crashed his truck into a bridge at as a result of a medical emergency.

Police began following a man they believed to be driving while intoxicated at West Jefferson Avenue and Walnut Street at about 7:50 p.m. March 26.

Police followed the man's Dodge Durango as he entered Elizabeth Park while driving the wrong way. The man drove around the park at speeds reaching 40 miles per hour--nearly striking another car head on.

The chase ended when the man's truck struck the cement railing on the bridge at the park's entrance, which stopped the vehicle.

Police immediately recognized the driver was not driving under the influence, but instead having some type of medical issue.

Trenton Police Chief Jim Nardone called the incident "high-risk" and said "it turned into a live saving operation by quick-thinking police officers."

Police alerted the who concluded the man had a diabetic reaction due to low blood sugar while driving his truck.

Fire fighters took the man to for care.

Nardone said he is not often surprised by the good judgment and professionalism of the city's police officers. "The citizens of Trenton are fortunate to have these officers working the streets of this city," Nardone said.

There were no other injuries.
