Two Injured in Accident on Grosse Ile Free Bridge (Update)

Both drivers were injured in the accident and transported to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton, according to police.

11:50 A.M. FEB. 26: A two-car accident that has closed the Grosse Ile free bridge has left the drivers of both vehicles injured, according to Trenton police.

Trenton police said a vehicle may have crossed the center line on the bridge and struck another vehicle on the Trenton side of the bridge, resulting in one vehicle coming to rest on the bridge’s railing.

Both drivers were injured in the accident and transported to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton. One driver is a 47-year-old man from Trenton, and the other driver is a Grosse Ile resident. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

“The Trenton Police Department has accident investigators on the scene to investigate the cause of the accident,” said Steve Voss, the deputy chief of the Trenton Police Department. “There are no signs of this accident being alcohol-related.”

The free bridge will be closed until at least 1:30 p.m., according to police.

10:44 A.M. FEB. 26: Trenton police have responded to an accident blocking traffic on the Grosse Ile free bridge on Tuesday morning.

According to a post on Twitter by @HollyRiopelle, a car has become stuck on a railing on the bridge.

Trenton police have re-routed traffic to the pay bridge, which currently is the only way on or off the island.

A blue, compact, four-door car could be seen with its rear end caught on top of a railing on the free bridge and hanging slightly over the Detroit River 20 feet below.

Several police cars were on the scene.
