Should Trenton Police Officers Carry Tasers?

The Trenton Police Department is one of the only police departments Downriver without Tasers.

Trenton City Council members voted in favor of allowing the Trenton Police Department to purchase 10 Tasers and related equipment Monday.

Chief Jim Nardone said the use of Tasers would reduce the risk his officers take when attempting to subdue a suspect.

"We think that officer safety is a huge factor in the purchase of these Tasers," Nardone said.

Nardone cited a recent arrest that sent two officers to the hospital with numurous injuries.

The Trenton Police Department is one of the only police departments Downriver that does not currently use Tasers.

The cost for Tasers and related equipment is about $14,100 and will be paid using forfeiture funds. The purchase won't cost the City of Trenton anything.

Items to be purchased are:

  • 10 Tasers X26P.
  • 10 Blackhawk X2 holsters.
  • 40 training cartridges.
  • 25 extra heavy duty cartridges.
  • 10 extra tactical magazines.
  • 1 Taser download kit.
  • 10 four-year warranties
