Police Blotter: Trenton Man Outsmarts Potential Con Artist

A man told police he had received a suspicious check in lieu of payment for an item he posted for sale online.

A 51-year-old Trenton man called police at about 11 a.m. April 15 to report a possible fraud.

The man said he posted a portable ice rink for sale on Craigslist.org for $500. A woman whose name was said to be Kelly Smith responded to the add and told the man she would purchase the portable ice rink.

Soon the man said he received a Federal Express envelope containing a check for $3,800 from Vincennes University drawn on an account from Regions Bank in Vincennes, IN.

He said he then received an email from Kelly Smith with instructions about what to do with the excess money and where he should wire it.

The man found that the Federal Express return label was from Brooklyn, NY, and not Vincennes, IN, which he thought to be suspicious and he contacted police.
