Police Blotter: Police Nab Suspected Thief

Trenton police arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly stole building materials out of a storage yard at about 1:50 p.m. Oct. 5 at , 220 W. Jefferson Ave.

A Diponio employee who alerted police said he heard a loud noise in the yard and looked over and saw a white male get into a black Ford Taurus with green scaffolding parts and Durawall sticking out of the back.

He said he yelled for the man to stop, and, when he did not, he got into his car and followed the Taurus northbound on West Jefferson. But he lost sight of the Taurus at Biddle and Eureka after the man turned west on Eureka.

Trenton police notified Wyandotte police of the incident. Wyandotte police had just stopped the Taurus and identified the driver, according to Trenton police. Trenton police then took custody of the man.

According to Trenton police, the man allegedly sold the stolen property to Downriver Scrap Iron and Metal Co. in Wyandotte and had a receipt for the amount the scrap yard paid him for the items.

Trenton police went to the scrap yard to retrieve the stolen property and while they were there, a scrap yard employee notified them that the man had already been to the scrap yard once that day and was paid for other items. An employee of Diponio, who who followed police to the scrap yard, said the additional items also belonged to the construction company.

Police said they advised the Diponio employee to pay the scrap yard the $60 the man allegedly received for all of the stolen property and reclaimed the property.

The Diponio employee said the stolen property was valued at about $1,200.

Police then transported the man to for processing.
