Patient Flees Trenton Hospital After Striking Nurse With Cane

The following information was supplied by the Trenton Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A 35-year-old nurse at Oakwood Southshore Medical Center told Trenton police a patient struck her with a cane at about 9 p.m. April 22.

The nurse said she was working her job in the emergency room when a patient became angry with her and the doctors for not giving her the medication she wanted.

The patient got up from a table and attempted to leave with an IV still in her arm, according to a Trenton police report.

The nurse tried to stop her to remove the IV and properly discharge her from the medical center, but the patient swung her cane at the nurse striking her in the right hand. The patient then grabbed the nurse by the injured hand and began squeezing it while digging her nails into her skin, according to the same report.

Police said the patient left the medical center in a vehicle parked in a nearby parking lot.
