No Change in Status for Grosse Ile Employee Temporarily Buried Alive

A Grosse Ile public works employee was airlifted to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit after being buried alive while attempting to fix a broken water main Thursday.

A Grosse Ile man who spent nearly 14 minutes buried beneath water, mud and clay while attempting to fix a broken water main was still in critical condition Monday.

The 56-year-old employee of the Grosse Ile Department of Public Works remains unconscious. His status has not changed since he was resuscitated by emergency personnel on the island and airlifted to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit on Thursday, according to Grosse Ile police.

Two DPW employees who are also trained volunteer firefighters were at the site at the time a hole dug to fix the water main collapsed around the man. The two men retrieved the man from the hole by digging through mud, water and clay with their bare hands.
