Man In Custody After High-Speed Chase Through Trenton

The following information was supplied by the Trenton Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Police arrested a 27-year-old man who led officers on a high-speed chase through Trenton, reaching speeds of about 100 mph, on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Police said the man, who was driving a silver 2009 Ford Escape, was pulled over around 5 a.m. on Fort Street, south of West Road, for going 54 mph in a 35-mph zone, and having an expired license plate.

The man told the officer that he was aware he was speeding and that he knew his license plate was expired. He also informed the officer that he had no insurance on the vehicle, the report said.

A female passenger was also present.

While the officer was preparing a violation in the patrol vehicle, the Escape took off and sped southbound on Fort Street, hitting speeds close to 100 mph.

The suspect attempted to turn into a parking lot on Van Horn Rd, but fish-tailed and almost lost control. The chase continued through the parking lot as the man weaved between parked cars, police said.

Throughout the pursuit, "the female was holding her hands out of the passenger window of the vehicle," the report said.

Once the vehicle stopped, the man began running toward the entrance of a business.

The officer then chased the man on foot, ordering him to stop three times. The man refused and the officer fired his Taser gun, striking him in the back. However, the suspect’s thick jacket prevented the barb from delivering an electrical shock.

The officer then made two attempts to tackle the man, but was unsuccessful. Another officer arrived and both were able to take him to the ground and secure him in handcuffs.

The man refused medical attention, and was taken to the police department.
